Hamilton Reprimanded for Impeding Lawson in F1 Practice
Lewis Hamilton received his second reprimand of the season after impeding Liam Lawson.
Hamilton, on an out lap, had been warned twice by his team about Lawson's approach on a flying lap. Race Director's notes mandate cars on out laps stay to the extreme left from Turn 16 exit to Turn 18 entry. Drivers must manage gaps before Turn 18 to avoid impeding a car on a competitive lap between Turn 18 and Turn 19.
Hamilton failed to stay left between Turns 16 and 18. Approaching Turn 19, he remained on the racing line as Lawson closed in, forcing Lawson to lift and brake slightly.
The Stewards concluded Hamilton disregarded traffic-management instructions, unnecessarily impeding Lawson.
While typically a warning is issued for impeding during practice, unless dangerous or intentional, the stewards deemed this impeding severe. They cited the track layout, high-speed corners, and specific instructions.
Factors considered included the challenge of managing energy deployment from Turn 16 to Turn 19 and the end of the lap. Both drivers noted the significant speed difference in that section when a driver has no more energy to deploy.
Considering these circumstances, the stewards issued Hamilton a driving reprimand, his second of the season.
