Coco Gauff delivered a masterful performance, defeating Alina Korneeva 6-3, 6-1 on Sunday evening to advance to the quarter-finals of the National Bank Open presented by Rogers in Toronto. The world No. 4 displayed exceptional solidity from the baseline, bringing an impressive streak to a halt for the Russian teenager.

Korneeva, ranked No. 89, had been the breakout star of the week, upsetting three seeded players on her path to the Round of 16. However, she encountered a formidable challenge in Gauff. The American player was relentless, refusing to concede opportunities and exploiting Korneeva's serve with remarkable effectiveness. Gauff capitalized on seven of her twelve break point chances and won 62% of her return points, consistently breaking the teenager's serve.

While Gauff's own serve wasn't entirely flawless, with three breaks conceded and a few double faults, it proved insufficient to derail her momentum. She ultimately outplayed Korneeva in the rallies, securing 58% of the total points played.

Eala or Bencic Await

This victory marks Gauff's fourth WTA 1000 quarter-final appearance of the season and her fourth in Canada, bringing her win total for 2026 to 34. Earlier in the tournament, she had convincingly defeated No. 29 seed Maria Sakkari (6-1, 6-4) and Kayla Day (6-2, 7-5).

Gauff now awaits the winner of the match between No. 12 seed Belinda Bencic, the 2015 champion, and No. 25 seed Alexandra Eala, the rising Filipina talent who arrived in Toronto after claiming her first title in Washington. Regardless of the opponent, a compelling quarter-final is anticipated, and based on her performance, Gauff appears to be a strong contender to win.
