Demetrious Johnson to Be Inducted into UFC Hall of Fame Class of 2026

Las Vegas – The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) has revealed that Demetrious Johnson, a former UFC flyweight champion, will be honored with induction into the Modern Wing of the UFC Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2026. The official induction ceremony is slated for this summer.

UFC President & CEO Dana White praised Johnson, stating, “Demetrious Johnson stands as the greatest flyweight ever.” White further highlighted Johnson's exceptional career in mixed martial arts (MMA), noting that his record of 11 consecutive title defenses is among the most extraordinary achievements in professional sports history. White expressed honor in inducting Johnson into the Hall of Fame this summer.

Johnson becomes the 18th individual to join the Modern Wing of the UFC Hall of Fame. This category is reserved for athletes who began their professional careers on or after November 17, 2000, coinciding with the inaugural UFC event under the unified rules of MMA. Eligibility also mandates a minimum age of 35, or at least one year of retirement from the sport.

Throughout his 14-year MMA career, which spanned 30 professional bouts, Johnson amassed an impressive record of 25 wins, 4 losses, and 1 draw (with a 17-3, 1 draw record specifically in UFC/WEC). His notable wins include triumphs over respected fighters such as former WEC bantamweight champion Miguel Torres, former RIZIN flyweight champion Kyoji Horiguchi, former UFC flyweight and bantamweight champion Henry Cejudo, and former Pancrase flyweight tournament winner Yuya Wakamatsu.

Following an undefeated amateur career where he won nine fights across various promotions, Johnson transitioned to professional MMA on August 15, 2009. He marked his debut with a submission victory at King of the Cage: Thunderstruck. Subsequently, he competed for the Alaska Fighting Championship, winning two more bouts before signing with the WEC.

Johnson's WEC debut occurred on April 24, 2010, as part of the preliminary card for WEC 48: ALDO vs. FABER at ARCO Arena in Sacramento, California. Despite a decision loss to Brad Pickett in his first WEC appearance, he swiftly rebounded, securing four consecutive victories across both WEC and UFC. This impressive streak ultimately earned him his initial championship opportunity against the reigning bantamweight champion, Dominick Cruz.

On October 1, 2011, Johnson headlined UFC LIVE: CRUZ vs. JOHNSON at the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C., challenging Dominick Cruz for the title. However, Cruz successfully defended his championship, defeating Johnson via unanimous decision.

His next outing saw Johnson fight to a draw against Ian McCall. In their subsequent rematch, Johnson secured a dominant unanimous decision victory over McCall, which propelled him to the UFC flyweight tournament finale, where he was set to face Joseph Benavidez at UFC 152.

At UFC 152: JONES vs. BELFORT, held on September 22, 2012, at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Johnson competed against Joseph Benavidez in the co-main event. In a closely contested bout, Johnson emerged victorious via split decision, thereby making history as the first-ever UFC flyweight champion.

Holding the UFC flyweight championship, Johnson commenced a historic reign, achieving 11 consecutive victories and successful title defenses over the next four years. This remarkable streak solidified his status as one of the greatest mixed martial artists of all time.

His nearly five-year unbeaten run came to an end on August 4, 2018, when he suffered a split decision loss to Henry Cejudo in the co-main event of UFC 227: DILLASHAW vs. GARBRANDT 2.

After this defeat, Johnson departed the UFC and joined ONE Championship, a prominent MMA organization headquartered in Singapore. There, he continued his success, winning five of his subsequent six fights. He claimed the flyweight world grand prix title and became the ONE Championship flyweight champion, successfully defending the belt once. He officially retired on May 5, 2023, vacating his title after a final successful defense.

Post-high school, he pursued MMA as a recreational activity before transitioning to amateur competition on the regional circuit in Washington.
