NHL Rumors: Buffalo Sabres Could Play a Big Role in the Goalie Market

Could the Buffalo Sabres move a goaltender or two?

Kevin Weekes of NHL Network discussed the Buffalo Sabres’ goaltending situation for the upcoming season. The team possesses significant depth at the goalie position, prompting speculation about potential trades.

Jamison Coyle inquired about the Sabres’ long-term plan for their goaltending corps.

Weekes highlighted the team’s depth, noting that all their goaltenders saw action this past season. He specifically mentioned Devin Levi, who spent the majority of the season in the AHL with the Rochester Americans and performed well. Levi, at 24, is seen as a promising prospect with significant upside. He was originally drafted by the Florida Panthers, with Roberto Luongo’s brother, Leo Luongo, playing a role in his development. Weekes reported that Levi is generating considerable interest from other NHL teams, with the Ottawa Senators mentioned as a potential fit due to his ties to the Montreal area and his junior hockey experience in Ottawa.

The discussion then turned to the possibility of trading Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen (UPL), suggesting that the Sabres could get a high return for him given the current scarcity of available goalies in the market. The question of who would replace him was raised, with Weekes offering Sergei Bobrovsky as a hypothetical target if the Sabres aim to elevate their team. Bobrovsky, a two-time Stanley Cup champion, is a UFA, meaning acquiring him would not require trading assets. This is presented as a strategic thought for teams looking to improve their goaltending significantly.
