NHL Coaching Carousel: Updates and Rumors

NHL news

As the NHL coaching landscape continues to evolve, several notable situations are unfolding across the league.

Kris Knoblauch, following his tenure in Edmonton, is reportedly not rushing into his next coaching role and is not expected to be involved in the Toronto Maple Leafs’ coaching search.

Vegas Golden Knights GM Kelly McCrimmon addressed speculation regarding Bruce Cassidy, stating that reports of the Edmonton Oilers being denied permission to speak with Cassidy were only “news because Edmonton leaked it.”

John Tortorella is currently the sole coach on an expiring contract, and there’s a sentiment that both parties may be keen on reaching a new agreement.

Looking ahead, ten coaches are entering the final year of their current deals. These include Joel Quenneville (Ducks), Jared Bednar (Avs), Rick Bowness (Blue Jackets), John Hynes (Wild), Martin St. Louis (Canadiens), Andrew Brunette (Predators), Ryan Warsofsky (Sharks), Spencer Carbery (Capitals), and Scott Arniel (Jets). Extensions for Hynes, St. Louis, and Carbery are anticipated to be finalized relatively quickly. Quenneville, nearing 68, may take a more measured approach to contract discussions.

Regarding other coaching movements, the situation with Jared Bednar after the Avalanche’s playoff exit remains to be seen. Patrick Roy has not been approached by any team for an interview, despite having two years left on his contract. Craig Berube, who recently interviewed with the Edmonton Oilers, also has two years remaining on his deal. The Los Angeles Kings have reportedly spoken with Peter Laviolette, while permission to interview Bruce Cassidy has not been granted to any team.

In Toronto’s coaching search, Jay Woodcroft is scheduled for an interview this week and also interviewed with the Los Angeles Kings last week. He is considered a strong contender for the Maple Leafs’ head coaching position, and it’s highly probable he will be an NHL head coach again next season, regardless of the outcome in Toronto.

The Maple Leafs are considering a wide range of candidates, potentially up to 20, with varying levels of experience. Most initial interviews are being conducted via Zoom. The Leafs’ management is expected to regroup and focus on the upcoming Draft Combine in Buffalo before proceeding with in-person interviews for a select group of finalists in the following week.
