Recent developments in the NHL coaching world reveal a dynamic landscape of expiring contracts, potential extensions, and ongoing searches. Kris Knoblauch, following his tenure in Edmonton, is reportedly taking his time before committing to his next coaching position and is not expected to be involved in the Toronto Maple Leafs’ coaching search.
Vegas Golden Knights GM Kelly McCrimmon commented on the situation surrounding Bruce Cassidy, stating that the lack of permission for the Edmonton Oilers to speak with him was a leak from Edmonton. Regarding expiring contracts, John Tortorella is the only coach currently on an expiring deal, and both parties are likely keen to reach an agreement.
Looking ahead, ten coaches are entering the final year of their contracts: Joel Quenneville (Ducks), Jared Bednar (Avs), Rick Bowness (Blue Jackets), John Hynes (Wild), Martin St. Louis (Canadiens), Andrew Brunette (Predators), Ryan Warsofsky (Sharks), Spencer Carbery (Capitals), and Scott Arniel (Jets). It is anticipated that contract extensions for Hynes, St. Louis, and Carbery will be finalized swiftly. Joel Quenneville, at 68, might approach his contract negotiations with less urgency.
The future of Jared Bednar with the Avalanche remains uncertain following their sweep. No NHL team has yet approached Patrick Roy, who has two years remaining on his contract at $4 million. Craig Berube, who recently interviewed with the Edmonton Oilers, has two years left on his deal worth $4.5 million. The Los Angeles Kings have been in discussions with Peter Laviolette, while Bruce Cassidy has not received permission from his current team to speak with other organizations.
The Toronto Maple Leafs’ coaching search is actively underway, with several candidates being considered. Jay Woodcroft of the Toronto Maple Leafs is scheduled for an interview this week, having previously interviewed with the Los Angeles Kings. He is considered a strong contender for the Toronto position and is highly likely to return as an NHL head coach next season, regardless of the outcome.
The Leafs are evaluating a broad pool of approximately 20 candidates with diverse coaching backgrounds. Most initial interviews are being conducted remotely via Zoom. The Maple Leafs’ management is expected to reconvene after the upcoming Draft Combine in Buffalo to focus on the search. The process is slated to continue the following week with in-person interviews for a select group of finalists.
