Ottawa Senators forward Claude Giroux has indicated his intention to play for another season. The veteran player, who will be an unrestricted free agent, has spent the last four seasons with the Senators and stated on exit day that he wishes to continue his career in Ottawa if he plays next year. While discussions about a new contract have not yet taken place, it is anticipated that an agreement could be reached quickly. Giroux signed a deal last year worth $2 million, with potential bonuses totaling up to $2.75 million based on games played and playoff performance. A similar contract structure is likely for his next deal.
Regarding goaltending, the Ottawa Senators are in search of a reliable backup to support starter Linus Ullmark. James Reimer could be a potential one-year contract option, and Leevi Merilainen might also be considered. The team is actively exploring the goalie market for external possibilities.
Several external goaltending options are being considered:
- Stuart Skinner (Pittsburgh Penguins – UFA): Believed to be a top free agency target for the Senators. He would not face the pressure of being a starting goaltender, though contract term and salary could be points of negotiation.
- Connor Ingram (Edmonton Oilers – UFA): The Oilers may attempt to re-sign him. A one-year deal might be attainable, and there could be less competition for his services.
- Frederik Andersen (Carolina Hurricanes – UFA): His value may have increased following strong playoff performances. He earned $2.75 million last year.
- Jesper Wallstedt (Minnesota Wild): Acquiring him would likely come at a significant cost. It is speculated that the Wild would demand a player like Brady Tkachuk in any trade.
