Audi Boss Binotto Embraces Driver Speculation

Mattia Binotto, the head of Audi, believes that the ongoing speculation about his team's driver lineup is a positive sign. Despite reported plans to retain his current drivers for the 2027 season, Binotto sees these rumors as an indicator of Audi's improving project credibility.

Audi has achieved points in their last three races, securing eighth place in the standings. The team aims to surpass Haas in the latter half of the season, a commendable performance for a debutant manufacturer team.

While Audi boasts a seemingly strong driver pairing with the experience of Nico Hulkenberg and the promising talent of Gabriel Bortoleto, the team has been linked with other drivers, including Oscar Piastri and Carlos Sainz.

The speculation linking Piastri to Audi is somewhat puzzling, as his priority is likely to remain with McLaren, who have expressed their desire to keep him. However, the ongoing uncertainty surrounding Max Verstappen's future could potentially alter driver market dynamics.

Carlos Sainz has been associated with the new entrant even before their track debut. It's understood that his father, a Dakar Rally winner with the German manufacturer in 2024, has advocated for such a move.

Nevertheless, Binotto maintains that he is content with his current drivers and downplays the notion that their pairing is simply a blend of youth and experience.

"I'm not really reading the newspapers, so I'm hearing things from you," Binotto told RacingNews365 when asked about the speculation. "Carlos is undoubtedly someone I know very well," he added, referencing their past collaboration at Ferrari. "It's easy and obvious to link him to Audi, but I can only say that I am very happy with the lineup we have."

He continued, "Often, when discussing Gabriel and Nico, I hear it described as a good mix of experience and youth. However, I see them differently. They are two very fast drivers, and I am happy because they are fast. We have a strong lineup."

"The fact that other drivers are being linked to our team makes me very happy," he stated. "It demonstrates that the credibility of our project is growing. It shows that the external perception that we can become competitive one day is no longer just a rumor, but a reality."

Indeed, it is understandable why such speculation brings satisfaction to the Italian. It doesn't necessarily question the abilities of Bortoleto or Hulkenberg but highlights the appeal of Audi as a potential destination for highly sought-after talents like Piastri and Sainz.
