The Latest on the Toronto Maple Leafs and Their Front Office
Hockey insider Elliotte Friedman has provided an update on the Toronto Maple Leafs' ongoing search for a new General Manager and other front office personnel. It appears the timing is not suitable for Doug Armstrong to potentially join the organization. However, Sunny Mehta has emerged as a name of interest.
As of now, the Maple Leafs have not formally sought permission to interview any individuals currently under contract with other NHL teams for their vacant GM or other front office positions.
Following the recent change in the General Manager role, Keith Pelley conducted a Zoom meeting with the hockey operations department. Sources indicate that significant organizational changes are anticipated within the team's management structure.
This situation mirrors Brendan Shanahan's initial approach in 2014, where he observed for a season before implementing changes post-2014-15. While Pelley didn't explicitly state "change," his message strongly implied it, particularly when he emphasized leveraging all available resources to their maximum potential. This statement left many with the impression that Pelley believed the organization hadn't been fully utilizing its assets, leading to widespread expectations of further significant personnel adjustments beyond the General Manager change, likely to unfold towards and after the current season's conclusion.
Numerous names have been speculated for the vacant positions throughout the week. Regarding specific candidates, while Doug Armstrong's name has been frequently mentioned, the current timing does not appear conducive for a move from the St. Louis Blues to the Maple Leafs. Friedman noted that situations can evolve, but as of now, a move involving Armstrong seems unlikely.
However, Sunny Mehta, currently an Assistant General Manager with the Florida Panthers, is widely considered a strong candidate and is expected to be a significant part of Toronto's search process.
Discussions have also touched upon the possibility of a return to the "new age" and data-driven philosophy that Brendan Shanahan implemented during his initial restructuring, a vision Keith Pelley also seems to champion. Despite these discussions, Friedman dismissed the idea of Shanahan returning to his previous role, stating he doesn't believe it's a realistic possibility.
