Washington Capitals GM on Alex Ovechkin’s Future

The GM indicated that while it's difficult to assign a probability, an extension is a strong possibility. He explained that Ovechkin has a specific process he wishes to follow, involving discussions with his family, advisors, team owner Ted Leonsis, President of Hockey Operations Brian MacLellan, and himself. Ovechkin is expected to take his time, making a decision on his own schedule, whether that's near the season's end or during the offseason, and the team will fully respect his approach.

The Detroit Red Wings Didn't Want to Move Top Prospects, Even for a Top Center

The Detroit Red Wings are currently contending for a playoff spot. Speculation arises about the implications if they miss the postseason again under Steve Yzerman's leadership. While there's no immediate threat to their jobs, the team's rebuilding phase is approaching a decade.

Key centers Dylan Larkin and Andrew Copp have both faced recent injuries.

Before the trade deadline, the Red Wings showed interest in acquiring St. Louis Blues center Robert Thomas. However, an executive involved in trade discussions with Detroit noted that the Red Wings were unwilling to part with their top prospects, specifically naming center Nate Danielson and goaltenders Sebastian Cossa and Trey Augustine.

The Blues' asking price for Thomas was reportedly equivalent to four first-round picks. While the Red Wings possessed the necessary assets, an offer including a first-round pick, Danielson, and either Cossa or Augustine would have been a significant consideration for St. Louis, given Thomas's value to Detroit. Looking ahead, Cossa is projected to be John Gibson's backup next season, but Augustine might spend a few more seasons developing in the minor leagues.
