NHL Rumors: Toronto Maple Leafs, and the Columbus Blue Jackets
Toronto Maple Leafs Eyeing Goalie Trade This Offseason
The Toronto Maple Leafs are facing a goaltending logjam, with four netminders currently under contract for the next couple of seasons. Three of these — Anthony Stolarz, Joseph Woll, and Dennis Hildeby — are on one-way deals for the upcoming season. Artur Akhtyamov is set to transition to a one-way contract after next season as well. This creates an untenable situation, as rostering three goalies is impractical, and the team aims to avoid losing a valuable asset on waivers for no return.
While the free-agent market for goalies includes prominent names like Sergei Bobrovsky and Stuart Skinner (who may re-sign with their current teams), Maple Leafs General Manager Brad Treliving can afford to be patient. There's an expectation that other teams will inquire about Stolarz or Woll. It's noteworthy that Stolarz’s four-year, $15 million contract, which includes a 16-team no-trade list, doesn't take effect until July 1st.
Columbus Blue Jackets Deferring Key Contract Talks Until Season's End
The Columbus Blue Jackets, having experienced a positive shift in performance since Rick Bowness took over as head coach, are adopting a wait-and-see approach for major contract decisions. Bowness's current deal is set to expire at the end of the season, and General Manager Don Waddell has confirmed that no extension discussions have taken place yet. Both parties agreed to defer talks until after the season concludes.
Similarly, negotiations with several pending unrestricted free agents, including Boone Jenner, Charlie Coyle, and Erik Gudbranson, have also been put on hold. Waddell met with these players during the Olympic break and informed them that contract discussions would resume after the season. Furthermore, Waddell mentioned the team's active pursuit of several college free agents, though he refrained from naming specific individuals. The organization has been monitoring these prospects throughout the season and has engaged in calls and meetings with them.
