The team reportedly plans to leverage its accumulated draft picks and available salary cap space to bring in new talent, aiming to accelerate their rebuild by integrating more young players into the roster.

However, the Penguins might face a challenging season ahead, potentially taking a step back. Several players, including Justin Brazeau, Anthony Mantha, Tommy Novak, and Parker Wotherspoon, have had strong individual performances. While the Penguins are keen to avoid losing Mantha to free agency, they are reportedly hesitant to overpay for the 31-year-old, especially given the current market dynamics. A long-term commitment, such as a five-year deal or more, is seen as unlikely.

In a more ambitious scenario, should the Toronto Maple Leafs consider trading Auston Matthews, Penguins GM Kyle Dubas is expected to make an inquiry. Pittsburgh possesses the necessary cap space and trade assets for such a high-profile acquisition. However, a deal could hinge on the Maple Leafs' demands, potentially involving prospects like Ben Kindel, and questions remain about Dubas's willingness to part with such assets. Furthermore, it's uncertain if Toronto would trade Matthews to Dubas's current team, and Matthews himself would need to waive his no-movement clause to facilitate a move to Pittsburgh.

There is also a prevalent belief that this season might mark Evgeni Malkin's final year with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Florida Panthers Taking a Measured Approach to Offseason Moves

Florida Panthers General Manager Bill Zito has indicated that it is too early to finalize their offseason plans regarding potential free agency signings or trades. He emphasized that team needs are often dictated by player availability, describing the process of roster construction as a "never-ending puzzle."

Zito explained that identifying specific roster requirements is only the first step; the challenge lies in finding and acquiring suitable players, which can be difficult if the right options are not available. He reiterated the Panthers' commitment to continuously analyze their roster and make informed decisions.

The Panthers' draft pick situation for the upcoming year is tied to the lottery outcome. If their pick lands within the top 10, they will retain it. Otherwise, their 2027 first-round pick will become unprotected and transfer to the Chicago Blackhawks as part of the Seth Jones trade, and their 2028 first-round pick will become unprotected and go to the Boston Bruins from the Brad Marchand trade.

Regarding pending unrestricted free agent goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky, Zito stated that discussions about his future would take place after the current season concludes. He expressed a desire to keep Bobrovsky with the team, hoping they can reach an agreement.
