Several teams, including the Anaheim Ducks, Chicago Blackhawks, Montreal Canadiens, New Jersey Devils, and Utah Mammoth, reportedly showed significant interest in Toronto Maple Leafs forward Matthew Knies. While some teams initially doubted the Maple Leafs' seriousness about moving Knies, they now recognize it as a potential option.

Montreal Canadiens' Trade Deadline Activities Focused on One Major Deal

Prior to the March 6th trade deadline, the Montreal Canadiens reportedly inquired about several players, including Matthew Knies, Nazem Kadri, and Rasmus Ristolainen. General Manager Kent Hughes had previously mentioned significant trade discussions, but the specific target of those discussions remains undisclosed in the media.

Hughes commented on the mystery surrounding the unidentified trade target, stating, "I think that’s fair. It’s still a mystery."

He further explained that his post-deadline remarks weren't unusual, noting that many teams actively pursue trades until the deadline. He confirmed the Canadiens did the same, engaging in various discussions, though one specific deal consumed a significant portion of their time. He said, "I don’t think I said anything that day (after the deadline) that was novel or unique. There’s a whole slew of people that continue to pursue trades until the deadline. We did that, not just on one particular trade, although one particular trade probably took up more of our time. But we were calling around about a number of different things right up to the end.”

The Canadiens are considered to be multiple players away from being a legitimate Stanley Cup contender.
