Evgeni Malkin Expected to Return to Pittsburgh Penguins Next Season
Pittsburgh Penguins and Evgeni Malkin Poised for New Contract
During an appearance on Sirius XM NHL Network Radio's TFP The Hotstove, Taylor Haase of DK Pittsburgh Sports discussed the strong likelihood of Evgeni Malkin returning to the Pittsburgh Penguins for the upcoming season.
Haase expressed confidence in Malkin's return, explaining the timeline of contract discussions. Initially, the Penguins planned talks during the Olympic break. While discussions occurred, the timing was suboptimal due to the approaching trade deadline. A miscommunication arose when Malkin publicly voiced concerns about talks being deferred until summer. However, after further discussions with General Manager Kyle Dubas, Malkin was reassured that talks would proceed in the summer. Malkin has consistently stated his desire to remain with the Penguins and retire as a Pittsburgh player.
Haase highlighted Malkin's strong performance this season, noting it's a significant improvement over his previous two, despite some recent injuries like taking a puck to the hand, which she clarified are not age-related issues. She also pointed out that Malkin's current $6.1 million salary might even be negotiable downwards, making a new deal a 'no-brainer.' This is further supported by a weak free-agent market and the Penguins' lack of a ready top-six center prospect in their pipeline, making Malkin's retention highly logical.
The Penguins have exceeded expectations this season, a surprise to many who anticipated them to be contenders for high draft picks. Although initial tensions arose when Malkin expressed dissatisfaction over contract talks being delayed until summer following the Olympic break, subsequent discussions have brought both parties to an understanding. While Malkin's commitment to returning was initially uncertain at the season's start, he now intends to play at least one more season, potentially more, with the goal of retiring as a Pittsburgh Penguin.
