Toronto Maple Leafs Make Coaching Change, Craig Berube Departs

The Toronto Maple Leafs have made a significant coaching decision, announcing their separation from head coach Craig Berube. This move signals a shift in direction for the organization.

In a statement, Maple Leafs General Manager John Chayka expressed appreciation for Berube’s contributions: “Craig is a tremendous coach and an even better person,” Chayka stated. “This decision is more reflective of an organizational shift and an opportunity for a fresh start than it is an evaluation of Craig. We are grateful for his leadership, professionalism and commitment to the Maple Leafs organization and wish Craig and his family nothing but the best moving forward.”

The departure of Berube comes as the Maple Leafs look to chart a new course. While personnel on the roster played a role, the decision was seemingly accelerated following the dismissal of former General Manager Brad Treliving. The new administration, including GM Chayka and Senior Executive Advisor Mats Sundin, has opted for a new coaching voice to define the team’s future path.

Berube was in the second year of a four-year contract signed before the 2024-25 season, a move made by the previous GM. The Maple Leafs will continue to owe Berube approximately $4.5 million over the next two years, unless he secures another coaching position.

While the team experienced challenges this past season, including injuries and a dip in standings, the mismatch between Berube’s style and the team’s performance was evident. Despite support from MLSE CEO Keith Pelley, the organization is prioritizing a fresh start. This change may also be a strategic step in retaining star player Auston Matthews, with crucial contract discussions anticipated in the coming weeks.

Craig Berube, a Stanley Cup-winning coach with the St. Louis Blues in 2019, is a respected figure in the league and is expected to attract interest from other teams. The Maple Leafs now join the Los Angeles Kings and potentially the Edmonton Oilers in the search for a new head coach. The future coaching landscape could also involve established names like Bruce Cassidy, who is still under contract with the Vegas Golden Knights, or potentially a first-time head coach.
