Pittsburgh Penguins Rumors – Cap Space, Evgeni Malkin, and Sidney Crosby

Despite having over $42.5 million in projected salary cap space, Pittsburgh Penguins GM Kyle Dubas has indicated that the team’s approach to free agency and trades will be cautious. Dubas emphasized a need to acquire younger, high-caliber players and wants to avoid long-term financial commitments that could hinder future flexibility. While there’s depth on the roster, the focus remains on continued player development. Potential roster battles are expected, with no spots guaranteed.

Regarding veteran players Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang, Dubas stated that decisions will prioritize what’s best for the team’s success, not solely fan satisfaction. He noted that Malkin demonstrated strong play after injury or breaks, suggesting a potential need for load management if he returns. Dubas expressed a desire to have Malkin back, citing positive exit interviews with the player and his agent, J.P. Barry. Malkin, who will be 40 in July, had a productive season with 19 goals and 42 assists in 56 games and has indicated openness to playing elsewhere if not re-signed by the Penguins.

For captain Sidney Crosby, who will turn 39 in August, his future outlook is on a “year-to-year” basis. It’s anticipated that he will continue playing for the next two to three years, with extensions likely to be addressed annually. This approach means he may enter the upcoming season without a long-term agreement in place.
