The Toronto Maple Leafs’ search for a new head coach appears to be far from over. Despite speculation and ongoing interviews, the team has not yet reached a decision on its next bench boss.
Sources indicate that Patrick Roy and Peter Laviolette have been among the candidates interviewed this week. However, Chris Johnston of The Chris Johnston Show reports that there’s no clear indication of a resolution approaching.
Reports suggesting David Carle was nearing an appointment as the new Leafs coach seem unfounded. While Carle was a candidate the Maple Leafs were interested in, along with several other NHL franchises, it’s believed the timing isn’t right for him to leave his current position at the University of Denver. Consequently, he is unlikely to be a factor in the final stages of the Maple Leafs’ interview process.
The Maple Leafs are reportedly considering a wide range of coaching profiles. This includes interest in individuals like David Carle, who lacks professional head coaching experience, as well as seasoned veterans such as Bruce Cassidy and Peter Laviolette, who possess extensive pro experience.
Clarity on Bruce Cassidy’s availability is currently lacking. He has not received permission to speak with other teams as of yet. Given that the Stanley Cup Final is underway, the Vegas Golden Knights have stated they will not entertain discussions regarding their coach during the playoffs. Once their season concludes in the next 10 to 20 days, more information regarding Cassidy’s future may become available.
The Maple Leafs are diligently working through their selection process. This week is also a significant one for NHL teams as the draft combine is taking place in Buffalo. With Toronto holding the first overall pick, this event is a major focus for their front office.
Therefore, it is anticipated that it will still take some time before the Maple Leafs announce their new head coach.

NHL Rumors: Toronto Maple Leafs Coaching Search Continues
It doesn’t seem like the Toronto Maple Leafs are any closer to naming their next head coach.
According to sources, Patrick Roy and Peter Laviolette have been part of interviews this week.
Chris Johnston, discussing the Toronto Maple Leafs’ coaching search on The Chris Johnston Show, noted that a decision doesn’t appear to be imminent.
Johnston stated, “I don’t know why everyone is jumping to conclusions just yet. You know, the Leafs are going to do interviews this week with candidates. You know, nothing has been decided. Nobody’s, nobody signed any contracts or got to that stage.
The report you’re referencing, or series of reports, I can’t even. I don’t even know where they started, to be honest, but that David Carle was going to become the new coach of the Leafs. That doesn’t seem to be the case, you know.
Obviously, he’s someone that the Leafs had interest in. A number of other teams have as well, and I just don’t know, at least at this time, doesn’t look like the timing is right for him to leave his post at the University of Denver. So I don’t think he’s even, you know, really factoring into the final, you know, set of interviews that the Leafs are going to go through.
So, you know, I think that they’re, it’s funny, they still seem to be considering a variety of coaches, in the sense that if we’re talking about them liking David Carle, who’s got no pro experience as a head coach. I also think that they’re looking at the experience end of the bucket, you know, being the Cassidy’s and the Laviolette’s.
You know, no clarity if Bruce Cassidy can talk to anybody at this point, I have not been told that he can. But obviously we’re at the start of the Stanley Cup Final here, and the Vegas Golden Knights have said they don’t want to entertain that discussion during the playoffs. So somewhere in the next 10 to 20 days they’ll play their last game of the season, and then maybe we’ll get some clarity on what’s going to happen next for him.
So the Leafs basically are working through their process, and this is a big week for teams across the league with the draft combine happening in Buffalo. Obviously, Toronto with the number one overall pick, that’s that’s a point of focus as well for the front office. So you know, I think it’s still going to be a little bit of time yet before we find out who the next coach of the team is going to be.”
