The Nashville Predators are reportedly in their fourth month of searching for a new General Manager and have yet to identify a clear front-runner. The team aims to make a decision before the NHL draft at the end of June, considering both internal and external candidates. Among the likely contenders for the Predators’ GM position are:
- Darren Yorke (Assistant General Manager, Carolina Hurricanes)
- Brett Peterson (Assistant General Manager, Florida Panthers)
- Bill Scott (Assistant General Manager, Edmonton Oilers)
- Evan Gold (Assistant General Manager, Boston Bruins)
- Ryan Martin (Assistant General Manager, New York Rangers)
Meanwhile, the Chicago Blackhawks may be looking at a different strategic challenge in the upcoming NHL draft. Having fallen to the No. 4 pick after the draft lottery, there’s a strong possibility that the top three selections will be forwards. This scenario would likely leave a group of defensemen as the next tier of available talent, including players like Carson Carels, Chase Reid, Alberts Smits, and Keaton Verhoeff.
The Blackhawks already boast a considerable pool of young defensemen under the age of 25 under contract, including Artyom Levshunov, Sam Rinzel, Alex Vlasic, Wyatt Kaiser, Kevin Korchinski, Louis Crevier, and Ethan Del Mastro. Adding another defenseman to this group would necessitate difficult future roster decisions. With Levshunov and Rinzel being right-handed shots, the team might consider a left-handed defenseman like Carels if they opt for a blue-liner at No. 4.
General Manager Kyle Davidson has emphasized the team’s focus on acquiring the best players for long-term success and optimal team fit, rather than immediate needs. He acknowledges that drafting another defenseman, centerman, or winger would create competition within the roster. Davidson views having too many talented players as a positive problem to solve, stating, “Good players are something that’s in high demand, so we can figure that out.” He also indicated openness to trade discussions to move up or down in the draft order.
The Blackhawks could also bolster their forward depth by signing Roman Kantserov from the KHL. While missing out on top forward prospects like Gavin McKenna or Ivar Stenberg at No. 4 is a possibility, the team is committed to maximizing their talent acquisition strategy.
