In a recent discussion on Sirius XM NHL Network Radio, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman shared his thoughts on the Philadelphia Flyers’ prospect Matvei Michkov and his potential trajectory with the team. When asked about similarities to the situation involving Trevor Zegras and the Anaheim Ducks, Friedman expressed optimism regarding Michkov’s integration.
Friedman highlighted the positive response from his Flyers teammates, noting their strong support for Michkov. He suggested that the team seemed to understand the reasons behind Michkov’s occasional healthy scratches, indicating no apparent friction among the players. This collective support, Friedman believes, is crucial for the young Russian player.
He described Michkov as a “stranger in a strange land” who has faced numerous challenges. Friedman emphasized the importance of patience and careful handling of such a talented player. He pointed out that Michkov actively desired to play for the Flyers, and that he was a player who could have been drafted much higher. Therefore, giving up on him prematurely would be a mistake; all avenues for his development should be explored.
Friedman expressed hope that Michkov would commit to spending a significant portion of the summer in the Philadelphia area, believing it could greatly benefit him. He drew a parallel to the approach taken with Vincent Lecavalier and John Tortorella, suggesting that a firm stance of “you’re staying and you’re figuring it out” is often the most effective strategy for exceptionally talented players.
It’s acknowledged that Michkov entered training camp at a disadvantage and recognized the need for better preparation, especially with a new coach. While the Flyers are aware of his potential, there are still areas in his game that require refinement. However, the consensus is that with players of such high caliber, allowing them to utilize their existing strengths while developing other aspects of their game is paramount.
