NHL Rumors: DeBrusk, Oilers, Laine, Kane, Kings, Sabres, Nurse, Doughty, and Byram

NHL news

The NHL rumor mill is buzzing with potential player movements and contract discussions. Several teams are reportedly in the mix for Vancouver Canucks forward Jake DeBrusk, with the Ottawa Senators, Seattle Kraken, Winnipeg Jets, and Columbus Blue Jackets among those showing interest.

On the Edmonton Oilers front, it appears both Jack Roslovic and Adam Henrique are unlikely to return next season. Meanwhile, forward Patrik Laine might find a new home with the Los Angeles Kings, potentially on a deal structured with a low base salary and performance bonuses. The Kings were also in discussions with the Montreal Canadiens at the trade deadline.

Speculation also surrounds Patrick Kane, with whispers suggesting he could be a potential replacement for Alex Tuch on the Buffalo Sabres. The Sabres are also reportedly considering moving defenseman Bowen Byram for a young, top-six forward. In another potential trade scenario, the Pittsburgh Penguins and Edmonton Oilers have discussed a deal involving Darnell Nurse, with the Penguins reportedly being his preferred destination. A trade involving Nurse could materialize around the NHL draft.

On the contract front, Drew Doughty and the Los Angeles Kings are actively working towards an extension.

Further analysis suggests that defenseman Bowen Byram could be an ideal fit for the Pittsburgh Penguins. Byram achieved a career-high 42 points in 82 games last season and added 7 points in 13 playoff games. He is seeking an opportunity to play as a top-pairing defenseman, a role that is currently unavailable in Buffalo due to the presence of Rasmus Dahlin and Owen Power. The Penguins, however, have potential openings on their blue line as some veteran defensemen age out in the coming years. Erik Karlsson has one year remaining on his contract, while Kris Letang has two years left.

Byram’s name had surfaced in trade talks last offseason, with the Vegas Golden Knights, Philadelphia Flyers, and Los Angeles Kings mentioned as potential suitors. The Flyers and Kings could still be viable options. With a year remaining before he becomes an unrestricted free agent, the acquisition cost for Byram might be somewhat reduced, especially if a team secures him for only one season.

A comparable trade scenario for Byram could be the Detroit Red Wings’ trade of Filip Hronek to the Vancouver Canucks for a first and second-round pick. Jakob Chychrun, who had two years remaining on his contract, was traded for a first and two second-round picks. The Penguins possess draft capital that they could offer to the Sabres, or they could potentially package a veteran forward or a prospect along with a pick.
