Wimbledon Finals Broadcast Rights Shift After 88 Years of BBC Coverage

The Wimbledon singles finals are scheduled to be broadcast live on a television channel competing with the BBC, marking a notable departure for the long-standing tennis tournament.

This development stems from a five-year deal extension agreed upon in May 2024 between Eurosport and the All England Club, which included the rights to show the men`s and women`s singles finals.

As part of this agreement, the broadcaster also received a daily package featuring 90 minutes of highlights from the SW19 championships.

However, Eurosport ceased operations in February of the current year following its acquisition by TNT Sports.

Consequently, TNT Sports has inherited these broadcasting rights and is set to air the Wimbledon finals for the first time.

The BBC will maintain its role as Wimbledon`s primary domestic broadcaster, continuing its coverage that spans 88 years.

The agreements held by both the BBC and TNT Sports are directly with the All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC).

According to Ofcom`s Listed Events regulations, “secondary broadcasters” are permitted to cover major sporting events.

This is the capacity in which TNT Sports will operate under its agreement with the AELTC for Wimbledon.

This year`s tournament is scheduled to take place from Monday, June 30, through Sunday, July 13.

Speculation exists that Britain`s two-time Wimbledon champion, Andy Murray, could appear as a pundit for the BBC, having recently concluded a six-month coaching period with Novak Djokovic.

Despite sharing some rights, the prestigious grass-court championship remains a key event in the BBC`s sports portfolio.

The BBC reportedly pays around £60 million annually for its rights to broadcast the tournament.

Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz will aim to replicate his success.

Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic will be seeking his eighth Wimbledon title, a win that would see him equal Roger Federer`s record at the All England Club.

World number one Jannik Sinner is also expected to mount a strong challenge, looking to recover from his recent French Open final disappointment.
