During a recent appearance on the 32 Thoughts Podcast with Kyle Bukauskas, Elliotte Friedman delved into the Detroit Red Wings’ situation and General Manager Steve Yzerman’s recent candid remarks. Yzerman expressed during a press conference that the team requires superior talent, a responsibility he shoulders but acknowledges his current roster isn’t quite there yet.
“And I don’t know if anybody watched Detroit, but man Yzerman looked mad. Yeah, he looked you could tell he was mad,” Friedman stated. “He left the possibility open that the structure changes and he definitely talked about player changes.” Friedman alluded to criticism Yzerman faced internally last year for not actively acquiring help, contrasting it with his efforts this season which still didn’t lead to a playoff berth. This, coupled with coach Todd McClellan’s strong reaction after the team’s 8-1 loss to Florida, sent a clear message from Yzerman: the current team is not sufficient. Unlike managers who might offer excuses, Yzerman was direct, reiterating his known reluctance to overpay, especially for short-term solutions. Friedman emphasized the significance of the upcoming summer for Yzerman, suggesting that failing to make a major move would be surprising to many, and that he has positioned himself in a way that necessitates such action.
Kyle Bukauskas added insight into the internal discussions between Yzerman and Kris Draper, where they questioned the team’s true quality even before their late-season slump. Despite making moves at the trade deadline to bolster the team, the internal sentiment was that they were still falling short.
Friedman agreed, highlighting Yzerman’s voluntary admission as particularly noteworthy, as it wasn’t something he was obligated to share.
