Vancouver Canucks Leadership Turmoil: Rutherford’s Comments Spark Questions

NHL news

Vancouver Canucks president Jim Rutherford addressed the media following the dismissal of GM Patrik Allvin, but his statements have only deepened the uncertainty surrounding the team’s direction.

Rutherford stated, “I take full responsibility for the season. I head up the hockey department, but I don’t make decisions for other people and Patrik had the opportunity to make his own decisions.” This comment suggests a lack of clear decision-making authority for Allvin.

Frank Seravalli observed that Patrik Allvin seemed to be a “GM in name only,” with Jim Rutherford driving most significant transactions. Seravalli commented, “I’d say it always ends bloody in Vancouver. But that’s devoid of leadership.”

On the Sekeres and Price show, Jeff Marek discussed Allvin’s firing, noting, “The guy that didn’t make the decisions got fired for the decisions that were made.” He added that this situation is likely the beginning of a broader restructuring of the Vancouver Canucks front office.

Ownership Hesitation on Ryan Johnson and Future GM Search

Taj suggested that Rutherford favored Ryan Johnson for the GM role but faced opposition from ownership. The situation is complicated by the fact that Rutherford is now tasked with finding a new GM, despite his preferred candidate seemingly being overlooked.

Farhan Lalji reported that the Nashville Predators have not requested permission to speak with Ryan Johnson, and Rutherford indicated he would not grant other teams permission to interview Johnson until a new GM is in place.

Coaching Staff Fate Pending New GM Appointment

According to Irfaan Gaffar, the decision regarding the future of head coach Adam Foote and his staff will likely rest with the new general manager. The team is expected to undergo further organizational changes, with significant decisions being deferred.

Rutherford’s Prior Knowledge of Quinn Hughes’ Departure

Taj expressed disbelief that Rutherford admitted to knowing for some time that Quinn Hughes intended to leave Vancouver, even before trading a first-round pick for Marcus Pettersson. He questioned why Rutherford wasn’t immediately dismissed for this revelation.

Thomas Drance quoted Rutherford explaining Hughes’ departure: “Some people think Quinn left here because the team wasn’t good, and I think he was leaving anyway.” Rutherford drew a parallel to Matthew Tkachuk’s situation in Calgary, suggesting that players sometimes leave regardless of team performance.

Rutherford further elaborated that Hughes “wanted to go back to the U.S.” and that he respected Hughes’ decision to exercise his option for free agency.
