Vancouver Canucks GM Search Nearing Conclusion

Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet shared insights on Sirius XM NHL Network Radio regarding the Vancouver Canucks’ ongoing General Manager search. According to Friedman, the team anticipates hiring their new GM sometime next week.

The search comes as current GM Jim Rutherford prepares to step down into a more advisory role after the June draft. Friedman noted that while Rutherford’s departure from the GM position was expected, the specific timeline has now been clarified. He praised Rutherford as one of the best in the league but acknowledged that it was time for a change.

Friedman also discussed the candidates interviewed for the position. He confirmed in-person interviews with Pierre Dorion and Evan Gold from Boston. Ryan Bowness of the New York Islanders and Shane Doan (via Zoom) were also mentioned. Friedman specifically highlighted Ryan Johnson, whom he believes deserves serious consideration and was recommended by Rutherford, though he noted some apparent hesitation from the Canucks to give him the job.

Additionally, Scott White of the Dallas Stars has reportedly joined the search. White, who has a strong reputation and has worked closely with Jim Nill, was a finalist for another position in Toronto. Another intriguing candidate mentioned is Martin Madden of Anaheim, known for his scouting abilities, having been involved in amateur scouting for the Ducks for approximately 17 years.

Friedman also touched upon the possibility of the team hiring a President of Hockey Operations alongside or instead of a traditional GM, a move Rutherford himself alluded to. The Canucks have managed to keep several names quiet, making it challenging to pinpoint the exact frontrunners.
