Giga Chikadze faced an early setback for his planned featherweight bout at UFC Kansas City, missing the required weight. Ranked No. 14, Chikadze weighed in at 147 pounds during Friday`s official weigh-ins, one pound over the 146-pound limit for non-title fights (which includes the one-pound allowance). His opponent, David Onama, successfully made weight at 146 pounds.
Officials confirmed that the fight between Chikadze and Onama will still proceed, but as a catchweight contest. As a penalty for missing weight, Chikadze will forfeit 20 percent of his fight purse.
Elsewhere on the card, the top bouts saw fighters successfully make weight without issue. In the welterweight headliner, Ian Machado Garry (171 lbs) and Carlos Prates (170 lbs) both hit their marks. Garry, ranked No. 6 in the 170-pound division, is looking to rebound from his recent competitive decision loss to Shavkat Rakhmonov. Prates, meanwhile, is riding a strong wave of four consecutive knockout victories to start his UFC career.
In the co-main event, veteran light heavyweight Anthony Smith (206 lbs) and his opponent Zhang Mingyang (206 lbs) both made weight successfully for their upcoming bout.
