Toronto Maple Leafs Dismiss General Manager Brad Treliving

NHL news

The Toronto Maple Leafs announced Monday night, prior to their game against the Anaheim Ducks, that Brad Treliving has been relieved of his duties as the organization’s General Manager.

MLSE President and CEO Keith Pelley confirmed the decision, stating that a fresh strategic direction was essential for the team to achieve its ultimate ambition of winning the Stanley Cup. In a press release, Pelley elaborated, “Throughout the course of this season, there has been deep analysis into both the current state of the Maple Leafs organization and the direction needed to achieve the ultimate goal of delivering a Stanley Cup championship to the city.”

Treliving’s tenure in Toronto has concluded. Under his management, the team made two playoff appearances, suffering a first-round exit against the Boston Bruins in 2024 and a second-round elimination by the Florida Panthers in the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Following the 2025 season, Brendan Shanahan was let go, and Treliving was entrusted with the full scope of hockey operations.

Treliving subsequently reshaped the roster to align with head coach Craig Berube’s playing philosophy. This included moving forward Mitch Marner, who had reportedly already decided to depart. Despite efforts to acquire Mikko Rantanen, Treliving was unsuccessful and failed to secure adequate replacements for Marner’s offensive production, with players like Matias Maccelli, Dakota Joshua, and Nic Roy not meeting expectations.

The Toronto Maple Leafs experienced a significant decline this season, transforming from an Atlantic Division winner with a second-round playoff exit into a team struggling to secure a top-five finish to protect its first-round draft pick from the Boston Bruins. Furthermore, the Maple Leafs became sellers at the trade deadline, offloading Bobby McMann, Scott Laughton, and Nic Roy in an attempt to replenish a depleted prospect pool. This underperformance made Treliving’s dismissal largely anticipated.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are set to commence a comprehensive search for a new General Manager, despite Treliving having one year remaining on his contract. The organization prioritized starting the GM search immediately, rather than waiting until the regular season concludes in over two weeks.

However, the future of head coach Craig Berube for the upcoming season and beyond remains uncertain. While Berube is scheduled to coach the Maple Leafs against Anaheim tonight and was informed of Treliving’s departure, sources indicate he has received no assurances regarding his own position. David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, speaking on TSN Radio in Montreal, suggests a strong belief in Toronto that Berube will not return next season, despite reportedly having two years left on his four-year deal. If this anticipated move occurs at season’s end, the Maple Leafs are expected to have several options for their next head coach.

Beyond the changes in management and coaching, the future of star player Auston Matthews will also be a key determinant for the team this summer.
