With Alex Ovechkin just one goal away from surpassing Wayne Gretzky`s legendary scoring record, excitement is building, and everyone wants to be there to see it happen. Fans hoping to attend Sunday`s Capitals versus Islanders game at UBS Arena will find themselves facing significantly higher ticket costs.
Ovechkin`s 894th career goal on Friday brought him level with Gretzky, meaning his next goal could be the record-breaker. The Washington Capitals` next game is against the Islanders, and in anticipation, ticket prices for this game have surged dramatically in recent days.
According to TickPick, the lowest available ticket price for the Capitals-Islanders game is currently a staggering $600. This price will get you a seat in the upper levels of UBS Arena. However, those who planned ahead could have secured much cheaper tickets.
Earlier in the season, the cheapest ticket for this game was only $48. Even as recently as Thursday, the lowest price was $163. While still expensive, it`s more than $400 less than the current entry price.
These elevated prices might be justifiable if Ovechkin manages to score his record-breaking goal on Sunday. However, it`s not a certainty. Although Ovechkin has scored 44 goals in his career against the Islanders, he has yet to score against their current goalie, Ilya Sorokin, who is expected to play in Sunday`s game.
Even with an empty net at the end of the game, don`t expect Ovechkin to aim for the record with an empty-net goal. He has stated he prefers to break Gretzky`s record with a goal scored against a goalie.
