Journalist Elliotte Friedman recently addressed the diminishing value of draft picks in NHL trades during an appearance on Sirius XM NHL Network Radio with Gord Stellick and Scott Laughlin. Friedman raised the question of whether the precise conditions of these picks should be disclosed immediately upon a trade.
Gord Stellick initiated the discussion by questioning the trend of teams devaluing late first-round picks, often including them in trade deadline deals. He referenced the “schmozzle” involving Toronto and pondered if general managers might reconsider this approach, potentially advocating for changes like mandated top-five or top-ten protections for draft picks. Stellick wondered if the recent complications would lead GMs to exercise greater caution in future trades.
Friedman agreed that general managers would likely push for stronger protections in trades. He noted similar discussions in the NBA regarding excessive “tanking,” where solutions like limiting the frequency of first-round pick trades are being brainstormed, though these are far from becoming official policy.
However, Friedman believes the current situation largely involves self-policing among GMs, where teams like Toronto take calculated risks for specific deals. He doesn’t think the league needs to strictly regulate or moderate these conditions. Instead, his primary concern is the lack of immediate clarity surrounding conditional picks. Friedman strongly advocates for clear disclosure of all conditions at the time a trade is announced.
He cited the trade between Florida and Chicago as a prime example, where it was not publicly known for an entire year that Florida’s pick was protected in the top-ten. Friedman expressed frustration over such delayed revelations, stating that he reviewed the original trade announcements from both the Blackhawks and Panthers and found no mention of these critical conditions. He firmly asserts that all conditional terms should be made transparent and available to the public when a trade occurs.
