The San Jose Sharks are taking a patient approach to contract extensions for key players and their head coach.
Macklin Celebrini’s Extension
General Manager Mike Grier indicated that while he’s open to signing forward Macklin Celebrini to a contract extension this offseason, there’s no immediate rush. Celebrini, who becomes eligible for an extension on July 1st, expressed his openness to all possibilities, stating his desire to commit to the team and his enjoyment of being in San Jose.
Grier has not yet spoken with Celebrini’s agent, Pat Brisson, emphasizing that ample time remains for negotiations. Celebrini is expected to command a significant payday, with his contract potentially mirroring or exceeding top NHL deals. Reports suggest Celebrini’s camp may be looking for a term of three to five years, with the Sharks likely aiming for a deal longer than four years to avoid him reaching unrestricted free agency.
Pending Free Agents and Coach’s Contract
Regarding pending unrestricted free agent defenseman Mario Ferraro, Grier acknowledged that Ferraro might explore the open market but stated the door is not closed on retaining him. Ferraro himself has expressed a preference for a long-term deal, though he remains flexible on the duration.
The Sharks also intend to bring back restricted free agent Shakir Mukhamadullin, with the team expressing continued belief in his potential.
Head Coach Ryan Warsofsky is entering the final year of his contract. When asked about potentially playing out the season without an extension, Warsofsky conveyed his deep appreciation for the organization and the San Jose area, highlighting his dream of coaching the team back to the playoffs.
