A match at the French Open was suspended after a medical emergency occurred among the spectators.
Shouts and screams were heard coming from the stands during the match between Qinwen Zheng and Victoria Mboko.
It is believed that a spectator fell and sustained a serious injury.
Play was stopped immediately, and medical personnel quickly went into the crowd to provide assistance to the injured individual.
Both Zheng and Mboko waited patiently while the situation was addressed. At the time of the suspension, Zheng was leading by one set and 5-3 in the second set.
The court supervisor spoke to the players, explaining that the delay might be prolonged because a spectator had fallen and was very badly injured.
Commentator Adam Fielder described the scene as a “medical emergency right now” happening in the crowd at the top of the stands.
He noted that there would be a delay while the person received necessary treatment and paramedics arrived. Fielder acknowledged the difficulty of such situations, particularly the uncertainty regarding the length of the delay for the players.
“So tough these situations, because you need the person to get the relevant assistance, just no idea how long this delay is going to be for the players,” he said, adding it was particularly tough for Zheng, who had just saved break points and was building momentum.
Co-commentator Lucie Ahl added that Mboko remained standing and observing the situation, and the court supervisor had come out onto the court. She also commented on the heat, noting that while it was hot, it had been warmer the previous day.
