Patchy Mix, formerly the Bellator bantamweight champion, has officially become the highest-profile free agent currently available in combat sports.
His release was confirmed after PFL announced on Tuesday they had reached a mutual agreement with the fighter not to extend his existing contract. This decision effectively allows Mix to seek opportunities with other promotions.
In a statement released by PFL officials, they stated, “Professional Fighters League and Patchy Mix have mutually agreed to not extend his contract. We both decided this is the best course of action for PFL and him. Patchy is a fantastic fighter and we wish him well. PFL is excited to crown our next 135 pound champion in the PFL World Tournament.”
This development brings closure to a situation that has unfolded over several months. Mix had publicly expressed his frustration regarding inactivity, particularly after a scheduled bout against Leandro Higo in November was canceled. Following that cancellation, Mix had requested his release from PFL.
Mix consistently voiced his dissatisfaction with the lack of fights. His last appearance in the cage was in May 2024, where he secured a victory in a rematch against Magomed Magomedov.
That win marked his seventh consecutive triumph, elevating his impressive professional mixed martial arts record to 20-1.
Unfortunately, due to the extended layoff and subsequent contract situation, Mix did not have the opportunity to defend his Bellator title or extend his winning streak further under the PFL banner.
It is now confirmed that both parties have come to a mutual understanding to part ways.
Immediate speculation suggests significant interest from the UFC in signing Mix, who is widely regarded as the premier bantamweight fighter not currently signed to the promotion. Mix trains in Las Vegas and works alongside the reigning UFC bantamweight champion, Merab Dvalishvili. He has also long indicated his desire to join the UFC roster.
This move into free agency appears to open the door for Patchy Mix to finally potentially make the jump to the UFC.
