Paddy Pimblett’s Tribute to Molly McCann After UFC Retirement

MMA news

Paddy Pimblett has expressed his deep respect for Molly McCann, known affectionately as “Meatball.”

McCann, Pimblett`s close friend and fellow fighter from Liverpool, announced her retirement from MMA competition on Saturday at UFC London, following a loss to Alexia Thainara. Addressing the London crowd, the 34-year-old McCann felt her recent performance did not meet UFC standards or her own expectations.

On Sunday, Pimblett posted a heartfelt message online, praising McCann`s accomplishments. He shared his sadness at seeing his “big sister” retire, emphasizing their long-standing friendship and unwavering support. Pimblett made it clear that while McCann`s fighting career is over, their friendship remains as strong as ever.

McCann`s professional MMA record includes 14 wins and 8 losses since her debut in May 2015. She became the Cage Warriors women’s flyweight champion in 2018, which earned her a UFC contract. In the UFC, she experienced both successes and setbacks, achieving two separate three-fight win streaks but also facing defeats against top-ranked opponents in the 125-pound division. Despite these ups and downs, she remained a popular fighter, especially in the UK, and made history as the first woman from England to secure a UFC victory in 2019.

She is particularly remembered for her two impressive spinning back elbow knockouts against Hannah Goldy and Luana Carolina. McCann has lost four of her last five fights and concluded her UFC journey with a 7-7 record.

Pimblett’s original statement further highlighted his emotional reaction and celebrated McCann’s legacy as a pioneer in UK MMA, her memorable knockouts, and included a humorous and characteristic quote from McCann.

It is noted that Paddy Pimblett is scheduled to fight Michael Chandler at UFC 314 on April 12 in Miami.
