Washington Capitals` star player, Alex Ovechkin, a celebrated figure in NHL history, is on the verge of surpassing Wayne Gretzky`s all-time goal record. At 39, Ovechkin is just five goals away from breaking Gretzky`s record of 894 goals this season.
Ovechkin has currently scored 890 career goals, including his 37th of the season in a recent game against the Buffalo Sabres. Despite this goal, the Capitals lost to the Sabres 8-5.
With only nine games remaining in the 2024-25 season, Ovechkin needs to score five more goals to overtake Gretzky`s record.
To break the record this season, Ovechkin needs to maintain his scoring pace in the remaining games. Achieving a couple of multi-goal games would significantly increase his chances. He has had five such games this season, but only one since late November. Below is the Capitals` schedule and the average goals allowed by their opponents.
Capitals Upcoming Games
- April 1: at Bruins (3.28 goals allowed per game)
- April 2: at Hurricanes (2.64 goals allowed per game)
- April 4: vs. Blackhawks (3.59 goals allowed per game)
Throughout his career, Ovechkin has amassed 1,613 points, consisting of 890 goals and 723 assists. Earlier this year, on March 9th, he became the 11th NHL player to reach 1,600 career points.
In the 2022-23 season, Ovechkin scored 42 goals and has reached at least 41 goals in 13 of his 19 NHL seasons.
During the 2023-24 season, Ovechkin achieved a record-breaking 18th 30-goal season in the NHL, surpassing Mike Gartner`s previous record of 17. He has now extended this record to 19 seasons.
