Olympic gold medal-winning wrestler Kyle Snyder has commented publicly for the first time since his arrest on prostitution-related charges last Friday in Columbus.
The arrest was part of a sting operation where police posted a fake online escort advertisement. Snyder was one of 16 individuals arrested after he responded to the ad and arranged a meeting at a local hotel. According to authorities, Snyder offered payment for a sexual act to an undercover officer upon arrival, leading to his apprehension.
Snyder issued his statement via social media on Wednesday.
“I want to thank everyone who has reached out with kindness and support,” Snyder wrote. “My focus is on my relationship with the Lord Jesus and my family. This is not the conclusion of my journey.”
Police released video footage of the arrest showing Snyder being taken into custody in handcuffs. Authorities reported confiscating $160 in cash from Snyder before formally charging him with engaging in prostitution.
Snyder, considered one of America`s most accomplished wrestlers, was arrested in Columbus, Ohio, the city where he was a three-time NCAA champion during his collegiate career at The Ohio State University.
During his time at Ohio State, Snyder also achieved Olympic fame, becoming the youngest American wrestler to win gold at the 2016 games. He followed this with a silver medal at the 2020 Olympics but did not medal in his third appearance in Paris this past year.
Snyder is scheduled to appear in court on May 19 to address the charges.
