Oilers Trade Targets and Sharks’ No. 2 Draft Pick

The Edmonton Oilers are reportedly considering options to bolster their roster. One potential target is Buffalo Sabres defenseman Michael Kesselring, a right-handed blueliner who has reportedly been unhappy with his current playing situation. The Oilers previously traded Kesselring to the Arizona Coyotes as part of the Nick Bjugstad deal. With Buffalo potentially looking to move him in the offseason for forward help, Kesselring could be a viable option for the Oilers, who are not alone in their search for right-handed defensemen.

Another player on the Oilers’ radar could be Detroit Red Wings goaltending prospect Sebastian Cossa. The Oilers were reportedly interested in drafting Cossa in 2021, but the Red Wings moved up to select him. While Cossa has only played one NHL game, he has considerable AHL experience. The Oilers might consider pairing him with Tristan Jarry or another capable goaltender as a 1B option.

Meanwhile, the San Jose Sharks have climbed to the second overall pick in the upcoming NHL draft lottery. This marks the third consecutive year the Sharks will hold a top-two selection, following Macklin Celebrini and Michael Misa, and Will Smith at No. 4 in 2023. The consensus pick at No. 2 is winger Ivar Stenberg, who is already competing against men in the SHL. Given the Sharks’ existing depth of young forwards and goaltenders, they might consider drafting a defenseman. Other potential defenseman prospects include Carson Carels, Chase Reid, and Keaton Verhoeff.

The NHL trade market could also see significant movement. With a somewhat thin free agent class, teams might explore trades. Speculation includes the Dallas Stars potentially not extending restricted free agent Jason Robertson, and questions surrounding the availability of Robert Thomas (Blues) and Matthew Knies (Maple Leafs). The Oilers’ own defenseman Darnell Nurse has also been mentioned as potentially available.

The Chicago Blackhawks, holding the fourth overall pick, might consider trading up to the second spot. The Sharks also possess the Edmonton Oilers’ first-round pick.
