Nikita Krylov Awaits Russian Flag for UFC 314, Expresses Pride

MMA news

Nikita Krylov anticipates having the Russian flag displayed next to his name when he enters the octagon to face Dominick Reyes at UFC 314.

The light heavyweight contender is making his return after over two years this Saturday. In his last appearance in 2023, a flag was notably absent from his profile, leading to questions about his nationality. Krylov addressed this situation during UFC 314 media day on Wednesday, clarifying the confusion surrounding his represented country in his previous fight.

“Yes, we discussed it with the UFC,” Krylov stated, “even in the two events prior, I requested to have Kislovodsk, Russia, listed as my fighting location. I have been living there for several years now, and I consider it an honor to represent them.”

While Krylov previously resided in Ukraine, he used to fight out of Donetsk, a region that Russian forces gained control over during the ongoing conflict that began in 2022. Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree claiming the annexation of four regions, including Donetsk, but the conflict over the region continues.

Krylov believes this situation caused the confusion during his last UFC fight. He now resides solely in Russia and intends to represent Russia this Saturday.

“The reason there was no flag next to my name in previous events is because I lived most of my life in Donetsk, Ukraine,” Krylov explained. “Donetsk is a city that is still under dispute, with uncertain affiliation.”

“Currently, I believe it is appropriate to have Russia next to my name. I am proud to represent Russia,” Krylov affirmed.

Despite his time away, Krylov returns to the UFC riding a three-fight win streak, presenting him with a significant opportunity to re-enter the light heavyweight division`s top ranks against former two-time title challenger Reyes.

A victory could position Krylov for a potential title shot, with his fight against Reyes being the opening bout of Saturday`s pay-per-view main card.
