Sport news

Reports indicate that Nick Kyrgios has been removed from the BBC`s broadcast team for Wimbledon in 2025.

This follows significant criticism last year when he was initially included in the commentary line-up.

Kyrgios had been aiming to return this year but suffered an injury setback

Approximately a year before his commentary role, the Australian player had admitted to a charge of assaulting his former girlfriend.

According to reports, specifically from The Telegraph, the candid tennis star will not participate in the BBC`s coverage of the Grand Slam tournament in 2025.

The 30-year-old player had expressed hopes of competing at the All England Club, which would have been his first appearance since losing the 2022 final to Novak Djokovic.

However, citing a persistent injury, the often-controversial player confirmed he would not be participating.

He announced his withdrawal via Instagram, stating:

Just wanted to give everyone a quick update – l’ve hit a small setback in my recovery and unfortunately won’t make it back for grass season this year.

I know how much you’ve all been looking forward to seeing me out there, and I’m genuinely sorry to disappoint.

This is just a bump in the road though, and I’m already working hard to get back stronger than ever.

Thank you for all your continued support – it means everything to me. See you soon!

Kyrgios is also reportedly not expected to continue his punditry role with American broadcaster ESPN.

He has provided commentary for American broadcaster ESPN at the Australian Open for the past two years, including the 2025 tournament after his first-round exit.

His selection by the BBC in the previous year drew strong criticism from prominent MPs and women`s rights advocates.

Caroline Nokes, who chairs the Women and Equalities Committee, publicly criticized the broadcaster, stating it should “hang its head in shame” over the decision.

A BBC statement at the time said:

We are in no way condoning his cited previous actions or behaviours, on and off the court, and he is employed to share his views on tennis only.

He has provided similar services to other major sports broadcasters in recent months.

The legal process he was involved in has concluded, is well documented, and he has spoken about it publicly.

In February 2023, Kyrgios admitted to an assault charge related to his former girlfriend, Chiara Passari.

However, an Australian magistrate in Canberra described the incident, which occurred in 2021, as “a single act of stupidity or frustration,” and decided not to record a criminal conviction against him.
