Insights into the Maple Leafs’ Near-Deadline Deal
Following the recent NHL Trade Deadline, insider Dave Pagnotta from The Fourth Period shared details on Sirius XM NHL Network about a significant trade that was on the verge of completion but ultimately dissolved at the last moment. The discussion centered on whether a Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman, widely speculated to be moving, ultimately remained with the team.
Pagnotta specifically highlighted Oliver Ekman-Larsson (OEL) as the player in question. He stated that leading up to the deadline, there was a strong belief within the Maple Leafs organization and among team personnel that OEL was destined to be traded. While other players like Bobby McMann and Scott Laughton were widely understood to be on the move, the potential departure of Ekman-Larsson came as a surprise when it didn’t materialize. Pagnotta noted that OEL himself was reluctant to leave Toronto, and is likely pleased the trade didn’t happen, expressing a desire to remain with the team through its current phase. Furthermore, the Maple Leafs reportedly set a significantly high asking price for the defenseman, which also contributed to the deal falling through.
Beyond the Ekman-Larsson situation, Pagnotta also mentioned surprise regarding the unsuccessful attempts by the Montreal Canadiens to acquire Patrick Laine. This failed pursuit means Montreal will now need to strategize on how to proceed with Laine in their future plans. However, Ekman-Larsson’s non-movement remained the most surprising near-deal for Pagnotta, given the strong indications he would be traded.
Leading up to the trade deadline, Oliver Ekman-Larsson was even held out of a few games, fueling trade speculation. Despite this, OEL had clearly communicated his wish to remain in Toronto, especially as his family was expecting a new baby, making a mid-season move highly undesirable. While there was speculation about whether the Montreal Canadiens were among the teams interested in acquiring OEL for short-term assistance, he ultimately stayed with the Maple Leafs. His future beyond this season, however, could be subject to change depending on the team’s strategic direction.
