Toronto Maple Leafs Begin GM Search, Eyeing Analytics
The Toronto Maple Leafs are engaging a search firm to assist in their general manager hunt. MLSE CEO Keith Pelley has been conducting preliminary discussions and will provide his shortlist of eight to ten candidates to the firm once it’s onboard.
The exact title for the upcoming hire—be it General Manager, President of Hockey Operations, or a combined ‘Head of Hockey Operations’—remains flexible. Pelley aims to maintain options, not limiting the search to a single organizational structure. The organization hopes to finalize the hiring process by the end of May.
While some reports indicate the Maple Leafs might initially opt for a GM-only hire, concerns are raised about the extensive responsibilities awaiting a potential President of Hockey Operations, suggesting a need for significant management experience in a leadership role. Regarding the GM position, there’s significant interest in emulating the Carolina Hurricanes’ organizational model, particularly admiring the work of General Manager Eric Tulsky.
Given CEO Keith Pelley’s known emphasis on evidence-based decision-making, it’s widely believed that the next Maple Leafs GM will need a strong background in analytics.
