Detroit Red Wings goaltender prospect Sebastian Cossa faced challenges in the latter half of the season, losing his starting position. Despite these difficulties, he achieved career-best statistics with a 26-8-4 record, a 2.33 goals-against average, a .915 save percentage, and five shutouts. Cossa is a pending restricted free agent and will require waivers next season. He has only played in one NHL game. If re-signed and not designated as the backup, he would need to clear waivers to be assigned to the AHL. Cossa has indicated that his agents will handle all contract negotiations. After three full seasons in the AHL, further development there seems unlikely. With Michal Postava having one year remaining on his entry-level contract, and the recent signing of 2023 second-round pick Trey Augustine, who will require significant playing time, Cossa’s immediate future with the organization remains uncertain.
Buffalo Sabres pending unrestricted free agent forward Alex Tuch expressed his enjoyment of his time in Buffalo but remains uncertain about the possibility of reaching a new contract agreement. He emphasized that his decision will prioritize the well-being of himself and his family, considering various factors beyond just the financial aspects or playing location. Tuch noted that he will take the next few weeks to carefully evaluate all his options before free agency. As he approaches 30, the Sabres are the only team with whom he can sign an eight-year contract. Potential comparable deals for an eight-year term include Adrian Kempe’s $10.625 million annual average and Nick Schmaltz’s $8 million annual average with the Utah Hockey Club. Tuch has consistently recorded at least 59 points over the past four seasons, including 66 points this past year. He contributed seven points in the first round against Boston but was scoreless with a -8 rating in seven games against Montreal.
