NHL Rumors: Pittsburgh Penguins and Florida Panthers

Pittsburgh Penguins Positioned for Offseason Talent Acquisition

The Pittsburgh Penguins possess significant cap space and valuable assets, positioning them to acquire younger talent and potentially a high-profile player if the opportunity arises. Despite their recent season’s performance, the Penguins are expected to proceed with their original offseason strategy. This involves utilizing their surplus draft picks and cap flexibility to add new talent, aiming to accelerate their rebuild with younger players.

A potential regression for the Penguins next season is a concern, especially given strong seasons from players like Justin Brazeau, Anthony Mantha, Tommy Novak, and Parker Wotherspoon. While the team hopes to retain Mantha, interest in the 31-year-old is anticipated due to a weaker free agent market. However, the Penguins are unlikely to offer a long-term deal (five or more years) to avoid overpaying.

Should the Toronto Maple Leafs entertain trading Auston Matthews, Penguins GM Kyle Dubas is expected to inquire, leveraging Pittsburgh’s cap space and assets. A potential ask from Toronto could involve Ben Kindel, a move Dubas might be hesitant about. Furthermore, the likelihood of Toronto trading Matthews to Dubas’s Penguins and Matthews waiving his no-movement clause for Pittsburgh remains uncertain. It is also believed that Evgeni Malkin’s tenure in Pittsburgh may conclude after the current season.

Florida Panthers’ Strategic Offseason Approach

The Florida Panthers’ offseason plans regarding roster changes are still in their nascent stages. According to Panthers GM Bill Zito, it’s premature to determine specific offseason moves, whether through free agency or trades.

Zito emphasized that roster building is a complex puzzle driven by player availability, not just team needs. He likened it to wanting specific items but finding none on the market, necessitating alternative strategies. This ongoing challenge requires continuous effort and careful decision-making.

The Panthers will retain their current draft pick if they finish in the top 10 after the lottery. If they do, their 2027 first-round pick will become unprotected and transfer to the Chicago Blackhawks (from the Seth Jones trade), and their 2028 first-round pick will become unprotected and go to the Boston Bruins (from the Brad Marchand trade).

Regarding pending UFA goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky, Zito stated that discussions will occur post-season. He expressed a desire to keep Bobrovsky but acknowledged that the outcome remains to be seen.
