Both the Edmonton Oilers and Florida Panthers are performing in a manner suggesting their success in 2024 was not merely a coincidence. The Oilers secured their spot by defeating the Vegas Golden Knights on Wednesday evening with a 1-0 overtime win, clinching the series 4-1. In the Eastern Conference, the defending Stanley Cup champion Panthers followed up their home wins in Games 3 and 4 by dominating the Toronto Maple Leafs on the road. They scored six consecutive goals to earn a decisive 6-1 victory, putting them in a position to potentially win the series in South Florida on Friday night.
Stuart Skinner, the goaltender for Edmonton, had faced challenges in the prior round and conceded 10 goals through the initial three games against Vegas. However, he achieved perfection over the subsequent six-plus periods, successfully stopping all 45 shots he faced in Games 4 and 5. Kasperi Kapanen netted the game-winning goal at 7:14 in overtime, redirecting a loose puck near the net to propel the Oilers to their second consecutive Western Conference Final appearance. Edmonton is now set to face the victor of the series between the Jets and the Stars, where Dallas currently holds a 3-1 advantage.
Returning to the Eastern Conference action, Florida`s six-goal outburst extended a streak of nine unanswered goals by the Panthers, starting from the overtime winner in Game 3 last Friday. Florida secured a 2-0 win in Game 4. During Wednesday`s game, goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky was flawless through the first 31 shots, narrowly missing consecutive shutouts by only 66 seconds. Notable scorers included Jesper Boqvist and A.J. Greer, who each registered their inaugural playoff goals, alongside defensemen Aaron Ekblad, Dmitry Kulikov, and Niko Mikkola, who also contributed offensively.
