Those who believed the Toronto Maple Leafs were out after losing three consecutive games to the Florida Panthers might want to reconsider. Toronto traveled to South Florida on Friday night and defeated the reigning champions with a strong 2-0 victory in Game 6.
Following a disheartening 6-1 loss in Game 5, it was reasonable to doubt if the Maple Leafs had the energy left to extend the series. However, Toronto instead entered the Panthers` home arena and effectively neutralized a Florida offense that had previously scored six goals.
Crucially for the Maple Leafs, Auston Matthews scored the game-winning goal in the third period. He drove towards the Panthers` net on the rush and unleashed a powerful wrist shot past Sergei Bobrovsky, breaking the 0-0 deadlock.
This goal marked Matthews` first of the series, representing a significant moment for the Toronto captain who had faced considerable scrutiny before Game 6.
Consequently, the Maple Leafs and Panthers are set for a decisive Game 7 in Toronto on Sunday night. Prior to that, the Winnipeg Jets and Dallas Stars are scheduled for Game 6 on Saturday night, with the Stars having an opportunity to finish their series at home.
