NHL 2025 Awards: Selke Winner & Latest Finalists

NHL news

As the Stanley Cup Playoffs continue, the National Hockey League is progressively announcing the finalists for its major awards recognizing excellence during the 2024-25 season.

During the 2025 NHL Draft Lottery event, the league revealed the three finalists for the Calder Memorial Trophy, presented to the top rookie. Competing for the honor are Macklin Celebrini (San Jose Sharks), Lane Hutson (Montreal Canadiens), and Dustin Wolf (Calgary Flames).

Lane Hutson distinguished himself by becoming only the fourth defenseman in the modern era (since 1943-44) to lead all rookies in points, finishing with 66. He joins an elite group including Bobby Orr (41), Brian Leetch (71), and Quinn Hughes (53). His 60 assists matched the NHL rookie defenseman record set by Larry Murphy (Kings) in the 1980-81 season. Should Hutson win the Calder Trophy, he would become the third Canadiens player to claim the award in the expansion era (since 1967-68), alongside Brendan Gallagher (2012-13) and Ken Dryden (1971-72).

In another significant announcement, Aleksander Barkov of the Florida Panthers has won the Selke Trophy for the second straight year. He was chosen over fellow finalists Anthony Cirelli and Sam Reinhart following another exceptional two-way season. Barkov, the Panthers` captain, played a key role in his team ranking seventh in goals-against per contest (2.72) and tenth in penalty-killing percentage (80.7%).

The remaining NHL Awards winners are scheduled to be announced on a daily basis throughout the latter half of May. The 2025 NHL Awards ceremony is currently scheduled for June 2025, though an exact date has not yet been announced.
