New Jersey Devils: Charting a New Course After GM Departure

NHL news

The New Jersey Devils and General Manager Tom Fitzgerald have parted ways, marking a significant shift in the team’s leadership. Managing partner David Blitzer and Fitzgerald agreed that a new vision and direction were necessary for the organization.

This decision follows a period of evaluation within the Devils’ hockey operations. The team aims to move forward with a restructured approach to management.

With Fitzgerald no longer at the helm, the Devils join the Nashville Predators and Toronto Maple Leafs in their search for a new general manager. Reports indicate the Devils are looking to hire both a President of Hockey Operations and a General Manager to lead their hockey affairs.

The organizational structure is evolving, moving away from a singular dominant figure like Lou Lamoriello. The new model will involve distinct roles for hockey operations leadership, allowing for a more focused management approach.

The General Manager position is considered attractive, boasting a strong core of young talent including Nico Hischier, Jesper Bratt, Jack Hughes, Luke Hughes, Simon Nemec, Brett Pesce, Connor Brown, and Timo Meier. However, significant work remains to transform the team into a true Stanley Cup contender.

A prominent name circulating for the President of Hockey Operations role is Brendan Shanahan. His ties to the organization, understanding of the market, and desire to return to hockey management make him a compelling candidate. Shanahan’s potential appointment could pave the way for a new General Manager to be brought in to manage day-to-day operations.

Potential candidates for the General Manager role include Jamie Langenbrunner, a former Devils player with assistant GM experience in Boston. Other potential hires could come from analytical or executive backgrounds, such as Evan Gold, Sunny Mehta, Tyler Dellow, or Ryan Martin, who have all held significant roles in NHL front offices.

The Devils are seeking a leader who can blend traditional scouting with modern analytics to guide the team’s future success. This transition signals a potential for significant changes both within the front office and on the ice.
