Molly McCann Retires Following Defeat by Alexia Thainara at UFC London

MMA news

Molly McCann`s professional fighting career concluded at UFC London, where she suffered a submission loss to Alexia Thainara, who made a remarkable debut on short notice.

Thainara, representing Brazil, swiftly took control by securing an early takedown. She then transitioned to McCann`s back and applied a rear-naked choke, forcing McCann to tap out late in the first round. Immediately after the fight concluded, Thainara celebrated her victory, while McCann removed her gloves and announced her retirement from MMA.

Addressing the London crowd, McCann expressed her gratitude and affection, saying, “UFC, Dana, Hunter, Mick, I love you all. I gave you my heart and soul.”

She continued, explaining her decision: “It’s not enough. The UFC deserves more. I deserve more. You all deserve more. Thank you and good night, UFC.”

If this marks the definitive end of McCann`s career, she retires with a 14-8 record, including a 7-7 record within the UFC. Her teammate and friend, Paddy Pimblett, was visibly moved in the audience as she made her announcement.

For Thainara, this victory marks a significant start to her UFC journey. She effectively took McCann down early in the first round, although McCann, fighting from the bottom position, managed to land some effective elbow strikes.

However, McCann`s success was brief. Thainara managed to break through her guard, move to side control, and ultimately take her back. Initially, McCann defended against a rear-naked choke attempt and survived.

Unfortunately for McCann, Thainara adjusted her position and this time successfully locked in the rear-naked choke, securing the tap out moments later. Thainara now looks forward to her future in the UFC, while McCann bids farewell.

“This is Alexia delivery,” Thainara stated after her win. “The UFC has the best matchmakers. I came, I saw, I delivered.”
