MMA News Roundup: Conor McGregor’s Potential Retirement, Cain Velasquez Sentencing, Artem Vakhitov’s UFC Rejection, and More

MMA news

Conor McGregor is giving strong indications that his fighting career might be over.

During a BKFC press event in Florida, McGregor implied he is more interested in pursuing a political career than returning to MMA. He mentioned turning down an offer to fight on Alcatraz Island in San Francisco. The former UFC champion stated he is content with his achievements and feels drawn to a different path, suggesting a move towards Irish politics. He emphasized that greatness shouldn`t be rushed.

This “different path” seems to be a bid for the Irish presidency, as McGregor has been openly critical of the Irish government, especially regarding immigration policies, and has expressed his ambition to become President to address these issues.

While McGregor hasn`t completely ruled out fighting again – he hasn`t competed since his leg injury against Dustin Poirier in July 2021 – he believes any comeback would be a massive event.

McGregor commented that his return would be considered the greatest and most anticipated comeback ever, but currently, his focus is on Ireland. He added that a return will likely happen eventually.

However, public reaction suggests that the enthusiasm for McGregor`s return might not be as strong as he anticipates.

Cain Velasquez`s legal ordeal has concluded with a jail sentence after he pleaded no contest to attempted murder and other charges. Velasquez targeted a man accused of molesting his son, leading to widespread sympathy from MMA fans and fighters.

Decorated kickboxer Artem Vakhitov declined a UFC Contender Series contract, which is considered unusual, especially given his history with Alex Pereira and the lucrative nature of UFC contracts. This decision has caused significant discussion within the MMA community.

Ryan Bader, another former Bellator champion, has also left PFL and become a free agent, adding to fan frustration about recognizable fighters leaving the league.

UFC Mexico City took place, and Brandon Moreno secured a decision victory over Steve Erceg in the main event, sparking various reactions from viewers.
