The Toronto Maple Leafs have acquired goaltender Samuel Ersson and defenseman Emil Andrae from the Philadelphia Flyers. In return, the Flyers receive goaltender Joseph Woll and defenseman Simon Benoit, plus a 2026 third-round draft selection.
Flyers GM Danny Briere commented on the departure of Ersson, stating that it might be beneficial for him to have a change of scenery to further his development. Media reactions to the trade were varied, with some expressing confusion and others highlighting the potential of Emil Andrae for the Maple Leafs’ defense corps. Analysts noted that the Leafs are looking to reshape their defense by acquiring a mobile, puck-moving defenseman in Andrae, while also dealing from a position of strength in goaltending with other prospects ready for the NHL. The trade is also seen as an effort by the Maple Leafs to address concerns about Woll’s availability due to injuries and to improve their defensive mobility. For the Flyers, acquiring Woll is seen as a good move, despite his injury history, and the trade effectively ends the “Emil Andrae experiment” for them.
