Maple Leafs Acquire Darren Raddysh in Sign-and-Trade with Lightning

NHL news

The Tampa Bay Lightning faced offseason changes, and with GM Julien BriseBois prioritizing an extension for Nikita Kucherov, it became clear they wouldn’t be able to retain defenseman Darren Raddysh.

During locker cleanout, Raddysh acknowledged the business side of the NHL, expressing gratitude to the Lightning organization for the opportunity to play in the league over the past four years. His comments suggested he anticipated moving on.

“I am incredibly grateful for everything Tampa has provided me. They gave me a chance to play in the NHL. I’ve been here for the last four years, and I can’t say anything negative about this organization,” Raddysh stated.

Sources indicated that Raddysh was unlikely to return to Tampa Bay as the team couldn’t meet his salary expectations. It was understood that the player deserved to test the free agency market to maximize his earning potential.

The Toronto Maple Leafs, known for their active offseason, have added Raddysh to their roster. Following trades and a coaching change, Leafs GM John Chayka completed a sign-and-trade deal with the Lightning for the defenseman on Friday morning.

The Maple Leafs sent a 2026 fifth-round draft pick to the Lightning as part of the agreement. Raddysh subsequently signed an eight-year contract worth $8.5 million per season.

According to reports, the deal came together quickly. Raddysh was a sought-after player in free agency, particularly given his career-best season where he posted 70 points (22 goals, 48 assists) in 73 games. He stepped up significantly for the Lightning, filling in for injured defensemen and contributing heavily on the power play, with 26 of his points coming with the man advantage.

Raddysh’s signing aligns with the Maple Leafs’ strategy of acquiring puck-moving defensemen. This move, along with previous acquisitions like Emil Andrae and Oliver Ekman-Larsson, strengthens Toronto’s defensive corps.

The sign-and-trade allowed for an eighth contract year and helped to keep the average annual value down, a strategic move considering upcoming CBA changes regarding contract lengths.

This acquisition appears to be part of the Maple Leafs’ ongoing retooling efforts. The focus now shifts to the Lightning’s next steps in finding a right-shot defenseman.
