Loopy Godinez had a successful UFC Mexico appearance, securing a victory and, thankfully, maintaining her composure.
A video clip from Godinez`s recent fight against Julia Polastri gained rapid attention online. In it, the strawweight fighter urgently told her corner team between rounds about significant stomach issues and the risk of an in-cage accident.
Ultimately, Godinez, ranked No. 11 in the strawweight division, managed to persevere through a challenging third round. She earned a unanimous decision win, breaking a two-fight losing streak.
Both athletes were praised for their exciting match. Godinez expressed relief at finishing the fight without any mishaps.
“I think I started feeling unwell on Friday, experiencing chills. I initially thought it was just because of my low body fat from weight cutting,” Godinez shared with Inside Fighting. “I didn’t mention it initially. My coach also thought it was due to low body fat. After weigh-ins, I rehydrated, but then diarrhea started and continued overnight, and again right before entering the cage.”
“I think between rounds, I felt it coming on again and thought, ‘Oh no.’”
Godinez, originally from Mexico but training in Canada, hopes to compete at the UFC 320 event in Guadalajara on September 13. She jokingly suggested a solution if similar stomach problems arise again.
“Maybe next time, if I feel anything like this, I should wear a diaper,” Godinez quipped. “That might be helpful.”
For now, Godinez is pleased to be back in the winner`s circle after previous losses to top contenders Mackenzie Dern and Virna Jandiroba. She credited mental strength for helping her get through the fight with Polastri and avoid what could have been a very embarrassing situation.
“I tried to ignore those thoughts before the fight,” Godinez said. “Even if I felt something, dwelling on it only makes things worse. I just thought, ‘Whatever, I’ll be okay. No one enters the cage at 100 percent.’ I just pushed through it and hoped for the best, and then I felt it during the rounds.”
“Fortunately, nothing serious happened. I acknowledged it, spoke about it, and now it’s public.”
